TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY
TOPIC:  GRACE AND GIFTS
TEXT:    Gen. 32:1-32; 33:1-11, 1:6,13 -18

From our text, the difference between grace and gifts has been clearly spelt out. Jacob wanted grace from Esau he had offended when he stole his birthright and his blessings. Here, we can see that gifts represented all the material things we present as an offering to God who Himself has enough – Genesis 33:9. God Himself is the giver of all things both physical and spiritual gifts to mankind – Psalm 50:10-12; 1 Corinthians 1:5-7; James 1:17. In this message, we shall consider the place of grace and gift in the believers’ life.

1.         GRACE BEFORE GIFT: Gen. 33:8,9; Eph. 2:8,9.
Grace is unmerited favour. It is God’s forgiven mercy Romans 11:6. it is the only sufficient means or source of our eternal salvation – Titus 2:11; Acts 15:11: Romans 3:24; Gen. 6:8; Rom. 5:18. no man on earth should expect to receive any gift from God who rejects the saving GIFT of the only begotten Son of God – Rom. 8:32; 12:6; John 3:16; Rom. 5:6. Grace is the good fruit of Christian life and when it is experienced, it will manifest itself in man as (1) Godliness (2) Freedom from the world,
(3) Soberness (4) Righteousness (5) Christian hope, (6) zeal – Titus 2:11-14; Gala. 5:22, 23.

Jacob sent gifts to Esau but could not buy his favour. Esau’s free favour came before his gifts were accepted. This should be the godly order – Isaiah 1:10-20. Have you found God’s unmerited favour?

2.         GIFTS WITHOUT GRACE: Mathew 7:15-23; 1 Corinth. 13:1-3.
Spiritual gifts alone cannot stand in the kingdom of God. A man of spiritual gifts without the grace of God is a ravening wolves and a corrupt tree. The gifts he manifest before the people are to him a covering describe as “sheep’s clothing” – Mathew 7:15. Gift without grace will produce works of iniquity – Mathew 7:23; Gal. 5:21-23; whatever you have without the grace of God will not pass through the fire of God’s judgment – Mathew 7:19; 1 Corinth. 3:1-3. the Lamp of spiritual gifts will burn out by the time the Lord returns for His saints whereas the oil of grace is available for all time and throughout eternity with Christ – Mathew 25:1-13.

3.         GRACE AND GIFTS: Mathew 25:14-30; John 6:27; Romans 5:16-18.
Grace received and kept will take us to heaven while spiritual gifs trusted to us by God and used for His glory will give us heavenly rewards. Grace fits us for heaven while gift’s add glory to us in heaven.

In conclusion, covet earnestly the best gift while you follow earnestly the more excellent way – the grace of God. 1 Corinth. 12:31.
